Norwegian philosopher Arne Naess (b. 1912) coined the term “Deep Ecology” in 1972 to express the ideas that nature has newly revitalized or invented pagan religions, and religions originating in Asia (especially Taoism, Buddhism, and Hinduism), provide superior grounds for ecological ethics, and greater ecological wisdom, than do Occidental religions. Further it was for the most an affair of the heart rather than the head as such. Two edited anthologies will be published in 2008: Ecology of Wisdom: Writings by Arne Naess and Wild Foresting: Practicing Nature's Wisdom. This article about Arne Naess, a philisophical forefather of so-called “deep” ecology, got me thinking about this question.
